Do not treat a homemade grout-cleaning recipe as safe for every tiled surface. Choose a cleaner permitted by the grout and tile manufacturers, check nearby finishes, and follow its directions. Vinegar, lemon juice and abrasive powders can conflict with those restrictions. A familiar kitchen ingredient is not a substitute for compatibility instructions.
DIY cleaning can mean carrying out routine care yourself with an approved product. It does not need to mean mixing a new formula. This page helps you assess common household suggestions before using them on grout.
Identify the grout, tile and finish first
Look for the grout product name, tile material and finish, plus any sealer or grout color treatment. Cement grout, epoxy grout and other ready-to-use grout products can have different care requirements. Do not identify them from color alone. If records are missing, ask the installer or supplier before selecting a treatment.
Check everything the cleaner would touch, including stone borders, metal trim and fixtures. New installations also need their specified curing time before cleaning. A hidden-area test cannot override a maker’s prohibition.

The Natural Stone Institute’s stone care advice warns against vinegar, lemon juice and acidic cleaners, and notes that abrasive scouring powders can scratch some stones. These restrictions apply to the stone beside the grout as well as any stone tile face.
LATICRETE’s cement grout care article also cautions against powdered cleansers on unsealed or unglazed tile and many stones. A recipe that fits one installation can be unsuitable for another. Its advice does not establish that every grout can receive the same treatment.
Choose permitted routine care
For a specific example, LATICRETE recommends a clear, neutral pH cleaner for routine maintenance of its PERMACOLOR Select cement grout. It describes gentle nylon brushing, removal of dirty cleaning water, rinsing and drying. That is an attributed example for the named product, not a universal recipe for all grout.

Remove loose grit first with a tool permitted for the surface. Apply only the stated dose, use the allowed brush or pad, and remove the loosened soil as directed. Rinse when required and keep people off a wet or slippery floor. Do not increase the concentration or scrubbing force because a mark remains.
Keep products separate
Do not combine cleaners or add household ingredients to a formulated product. The EPA advises against mixing cleaning products. In particular, do not mix bleach with other cleaners.
Bubbling, fragrance or foam does not establish that a recipe is suitable or effective on your installation. Use one permitted product as directed. Before changing products, ask the makers how previous residues must be removed. Follow label precautions for protective equipment, ventilation, storage and access.
Read environmental claims separately from care instructions
Words such as “natural” or “eco-friendly” do not identify the tile, establish a cleaning dose or confirm that a finish can tolerate the product. Check any environmental claim for the specific formula and use. Do not turn a pantry ingredient into a claim that a recipe is harmless to people, surfaces or waterways.
For your cleaning decision, start with compatibility and the required method. Measure the stated amount and follow disposal instructions. Avoid adding oils or fragrances to a cleaner unless its manufacturer directs you to do so.
Know when a mark needs assessment

Cracked or missing grout, loose tile and a recurring damp area need assessment beyond surface cleaning. Cleaning cannot fill a joint or repair a leak.
